The Buy American Act is a law designed to protect American industry and jobs by awarding contracts for public works projects to U.S. firms and workers and requiring the government to purchase domestic products first when available at competitive prices.
Under this act, the U.S. government must purchase domestically produced products like steel instead of cheaper imports when they are of equal quality and price. To be considered as being produced in the U.S., goods must be manufactured in the U.S. and at least 50% of the cost of their components must come from the U.S.
